										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Have you ever walked into a party and felt like the most popular person in the room — where everyone’s like, “Hey man, great to see you!” or “I’m so glad you could make it”?</p>
<p>Now imagine having that feeling <em>every morning</em> when you switch on your computer to log in to work. That’s what my first few months in the Cheesecake Labs team have been like. And, for my first full-time job in mobile development, I couldn’t be more psyched to be part of this culture.<br />
<span id="more-7814"></span></p>
<h2>What’s on your wish list for the ideal first employer?</h2>
<p>After I graduated in 2020, I went into my first internship within the world of mobile development. The job itself was great — I realized that I loved building products that users have front-end experiences with, such as screens and interfaces.</p>
<p>But there was something about the culture there that didn’t sit right with me and — having not been a full-time employee before — I wasn’t sure if that was just how work was “meant to be”.</p>
<p>My focus was to be a great developer and to work with other, great mobile development teams. So I started spending my evenings researching the right opportunities for me.</p>
<p>Where could I work that allowed me to stay at the forefront of technology? Which companies would have clients in the sectors I found most exciting? And, crucially, who were the teams that made me want to challenge myself and continuously improve?</p>
<h2>“Eu corri para o abraço”</h2>
<p>My search for the perfect workplace started broad. I trawled through Google, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn for value-driven companies with strong, user-centric mobile development capabilities.</p>
<p>It was on my LinkedIn that the CKL logo first appeared (probably as a result of my search history — thanks SEO!). Then I also noticed a Facebook post they’d put out about recruiting new engineers. I took a look at the website and thought, “Woah. This is where I want to be”.</p>
<p><strong>It was clear to me that the culture, goals, and values of the business really aligned with my own. The portfolio and case studies showed international clients — the kind I wanted to work with.</strong></p>
<p>When you meet me, you’ll quickly learn that I can be quite determined. So I made it my mission to become part of the Cheesecake Labs team. We have a saying in Brazil, “<em>Eu corri para o abraço</em>”, meaning “I ran to embrace it”. And I looked for every opportunity to call myself a Caker.</p>
<h2>My first steps as a Caker</h2>
<p>From my very first day, the reception here at Cheesecake Labs has been incredible. The initial weeks were spent being introduced to <em>everyone</em>. Whenever someone’s name comes up in relation to a workflow, process, or client account, you get an intro.</p>
<p>It’s strange to be entering the world of work from my bedroom, but CKL does a great job of making all of us feel connected even if we’re spread right across the World.</p>
<p><strong>Today, I’m working on an IoT project, which is an amazing opportunity.</strong> IoT is such a disruptive space and I’m learning so much as we go. I’m surrounded by people who know a lot about their individual specialisms — I just hope some of their intelligence rubs off on me!</p>
<p>One of the most impressive things I’ve realized about how Cakers work is the process they have (or “we have”, I should say — I’m still getting used to saying that!). You can really feel like there’s a reason for every process and a way of doing things correctly to deliver delightful digital experiences. It just flows. And that’s no mean feat when we’re juggling clients, speaking over WiFi calls, and having catch-ups interrupted by excitable dogs (we love that really, though).</p>
<p>Of course, I’m feeling pushed. This is my first job and it’s at a company that Clutch considers <a href="https://blog-stg.cheesecakelabs.com/blog/technology-gold-winners-top-10-worldwide/">Top 10 in the world for mobile development</a>. That’s pressure! But it’s good pressure, really. It’s “Okay, let’s impress the client” pressure. I’m not in my comfort zone at all most of the time, but I know I’ve got support.</p>
<p><strong>The culture here is all about empowering us to do our very best work. We need to feel comfortable with the technology and feel comfortable to create results. Right from the get-go I was involved in client meetings and was encouraged by my Project Manager to share my suggestions.</strong></p>
<p>I’ve been made to feel like I can create a real contribution to the future of mobile development as part of the Cheesecake Labs team. And I’ve got my eye on helping CKL become a world leader for Flutter development. Bold, considering I’ve only been here a few months? Sure. But certainly very possible with the rest of the Cakers by my side.</p>
<p>They say that “If I saw further, it was because I was on the shoulders of giants”. But if I was to put a CKL spin on that saying, it would be: “<strong>If I became a better person, it was because I was surrounded by Cakers and, more than that, surrounded by friends</strong>&#8221;</p>
<h2>My advice for new grads and junior mobile engineers&#8230;</h2>
<p>Your first job <em>can</em> be a dream role. Try not to settle for anything else.</p>
<p>I wake up in the morning excited to start work — and that’s a great feeling to start your career with.</p>
<p>If you aren’t there just yet, though, don’t worry. Do your homework, study technologies, study architectures. You can learn about other solutions already on the market and upskill yourself professionally by taking online courses.</p>
<p>And, most importantly, surround yourself with people who can make you a better person and encourage a <em>mutual</em> exchange of knowledge. My CKL ‘Buddy’, Diego, is the first person I go to with any difficulties I face and my Project Manager Fifo is a lifeline as well. Having people you trust to talk ideas through with is super important when you’re trying to change the world with technology!</p>
<p>It might sound lofty, but that’s how I explain what we’re doing at Cheesecake Labs. We develop tech that changes the world in a delightful, accessible way for all users.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The opportunity to work at Cheesecake Labs appeared on my LinkedIn feed in the middle of a detailed job hunt. I was looking to work in an environment that felt collaborative and professional — I also wanted to be somewhere that my potential career trajectory was made clear.</p>
<p>At the time, my job description was Software Engineer. But I knew that in the not-so-distant future I wanted to climb to Senior Engineer and, eventually, to Tech Lead.<br />
<span id="more-7804"></span></p>
<p>Even as I started my initial research into the Cheesecake Labs company and how it operates, I could tell that I’d found my tribe. The <a href="https://blog-stg.cheesecakelabs.com/portfolio/">projects looked excellent</a>. The team had <a href="https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Cheesecake-Labs-Reviews-E1486854.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">great reviews</a>. The structure of the company was exactly what I had in mind.</p>
<p>Now all I had to go was get in!</p>
<p>I entered the CKL recruitment process in March and on April 14th 2021, I was logging on for my first day.</p>
<h2>My first three months on the Cheesecake Labs leadership program</h2>
<p>The CKL recruitment team was really receptive to my aspirations of becoming a Tech Lead. In fact, they even encouraged me to join the leadership acceleration program from as early as my first day.</p>
<p>That’s one of the stand-out values I’ve come to love here at Cheesecake Labs. Sure, we’re a software design and engineering partner, but technology isn’t the only thing that matters here.</p>
<p>Professional and personal development is something that’s always been a priority for me — and that’s echoed back by the Cheesecake Labs team 100%. After all, the better we feel in the jobs we’re doing, the better job we can do for our clients.</p>
<h3>Working 1 on 1 with the Senior Team</h3>
<p>As an aspiring Tech Lead, I look up to the rest of the Senior Team as people who have “been there, done that” and can show me how it’s done.</p>
<p>Within my first few weeks in the team, I had sat down for a 1-to-1 with my Project Manager to talk about leadership, what it means to be a leader at CKL, and the ways that I could improve my leadership skills and competencies.</p>
<p>My PM gives me development tasks to try, but he also more-or-less leaves me to do the job: to lead! I’ve been inspired to step up and take the position of a leader — even if I still feel like I’m on the journey to getting there! I manage conversations with our clients and organize the engineering team.</p>
<p>Now that I’m training as a Tech Lead I’m also closer to the VP of Engineering. He’s giving me his advice, feedback on what to improve, and telling me what I need to do to become a better leader.</p>

<h2>‘Learning by doing’ is a fast-track to success</h2>
<p>There’s always a learning curve to navigate when starting at a new company. And in my move to Cheesecake Labs, I’m also learning how to level up and manage a team.</p>
<p>It’s not always easy — but it is always fun.</p>
<p>I’ve managed to avoid getting stressed out by anything simply because my colleagues are so welcoming. I also get the feeling that they genuinely care about my progression. Mistakes aren’t mistakes, they’re lessons. And with the emphasis on ‘learning by doing’ I get to take all the advice I’m hearing and put it into practice immediately.</p>
<p><strong>Other Cakers who have been through the leadership program here say that 1 year at CKL is like 3 years elsewhere. And I can believe them! Our company has a fast-paced learning method and we develop people in record time.</strong></p>
<h2>My advice for other Senior Software Engineers and those on their way to Tech Lead…</h2>
<p>They say that, as a leader, you need to be a great communicator, have empathy for others, and know the value of teamwork (and how to promote it). I hope that during my first three months on the Cheesecake Labs leadership program I’ve started to exhibit these skills.</p>
<p>And, who knows, maybe I’ll even help inspire other people who want to get to where I am today?</p>
<p>If you’re reading this thinking, “How can I make the step from Software Engineer to Senior Engineer or Tech Lead?”, my advice would be:</p>
<h3>Keep your finger on the pulse</h3>
<p>The technology industry is <em>constantly</em> evolving.</p>
<p>I would say that keeping up-to-date with sector news, insights, and opinions is important for anyone working within our field — but it’s essential if you want to be a leader. Remember, people will look to you as someone who knows their stuff (both clients and colleagues alike).</p>
<p>Read everything you can. Play around with new tech as it becomes available. Have an opinion on what’s changing and why.</p>
<h3>Learn from the best leaders</h3>
<p>Being a Tech Lead is about both understanding and championing tech and helping other people succeed. That’s why I’d recommend any aspiring Senior Engineer to find and follow the prominent leaders who resonate with you.</p>
<p>Personally, I like Bill Gates and follow him <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/williamhgates/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">on LinkedIn</a> and via <a href="https://www.gatesnotes.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">his blog</a>. I make it my mission to read some of <a href="https://www.gatesnotes.com/Books" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">the books that Bill recommends</a> — especially the ones on leadership and personal development, even if there’s no direct link back to the work I do.</p>
<p>I think there’s something to be gained from simply observing the world’s best leaders and thinking, “Okay, what’s working for them and why?</p>
<p>How did they achieve it?”.</p>
<h3>Be available for your team — whatever the circumstances</h3>
<p>This is an unusual time to become a new manager. My team is distributed right across Brazil and, as it stands we don’t have any plans to meet up IRL. And, at the same time, our projects move quickly and it’s crucial we all stay connected.</p>
<p>I’ve set the standard that my team checks in formally, once a day, to share news and updates. We also chat using Slack throughout the day, but with the understanding that someone’s response will not always be synchronous. We’ve all got our own stuff going on as we continue to navigate the pandemic — and we need to be as sensitive to that as possible while keeping morale and energy high and achieving excellence in our products.</p>
<p><strong>There’s very little way of knowing what my next three months of tech leadership will bring, let alone the next three years! But for as long as I stay at Cheesecake Labs, I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be an unforgettable experience indeed.</strong></p>

The local LGBTQIA+ community started putting an end to police oppression and violence. They fought back, possibly creating the greatest milestone in the community&#8217;s rights history. This was just the beginning of a series of demonstrations and movements that took over the world, which reached more visibility to diversity.</span></p>
<p><span id="more-7656"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Until 1990, homosexuality carried the suffix &#8220;ism&#8221; and was treated as a disease. On May 17th of the same year,&nbsp;the World Health Organization (WHO) </span><a href="https://www1.folha.uol.com.br/cotidiano/2021/05/entenda-por-que-hoje-e-o-dia-internacional-contra-a-homofobia-e-a-transfobia.shtml"><span style="font-weight: 400;">removed it from the list of diseases</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and adopted the suffix &#8220;ity&#8221;, which refers to behavior. This achievement became a reason to celebrate, which resulted on May 17th becoming the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Unfortunately, current studies show that much remains to be achieved, including basic rights that are still denied to the LGBTQIA+ community in many countries.</span></p>
<ul>
<li><a href="https://www.bbc.com/portuguese/internacional-57641679">69 countries</a> still consider it a crime to be homosexual &#8211; in 13 of them, people can be sentenced to death</li>
<li>Until 2019, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/portuguese/internacional-48801567">only nine countries</a> in the world offered constitutional protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation. In practice, however, this does not mean that LGBTQIA+ people are effectively protected.</li>
<li>One Brazilian LGBTQIA+ person dies by LGBTphobia <a href="https://grupogaydabahia.com.br/relatorios-anuais-de-morte-de-lgbti/?utm_campaign=trilha-impacto-positivo_causa_lgbt_nas_empresas_email1_-_teste&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=RD+Station">every 26 hours</a>, either by murder or suicide.</li>
<li>Brazil is the country where <a href="https://www.uol.com.br/universa/noticias/redacao/2021/01/29/brasil-e-o-pais-que-mais-mata-pessoas-trans-175-foram-assassinadas-em-2020.htm">most transgender</a>&nbsp;are killed in the world.</li>
<li><a href="https://antrabrasil.files.wordpress.com/2020/06/boletim-3-2020-assassinatos-antra.pdf?utm_campaign=trilha-impacto-positivo_causa_lgbt_nas_empresas_email1_-_teste&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=RD+Station">Only 4%</a> of the trans population in Brazil are in formal jobs with the possibility of promotion and career progression.</li>

<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Campaigns in favor of diversity</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Diversity parades and other pride movements are gaining more and more </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">popularity</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> around the world. But it is still problematic that countries like Brazil, which has one of the biggest LGBTQIA+ pride parades in the world that takes place in São Paulo, is still </span><a href="https://brasil.un.org/pt-br/110425-brasil-e-o-pais-que-mais-mata-travestis-e-pessoas-trans-no-mundo-alerta-relatorio-da"><span style="font-weight: 400;">the country where</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> most transgender people are killed in the world.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It is because of this controversial reality that these movements need to be taken to the streets even more, to reach more people all over the world. The more diversity is naturalized, the more it will be accepted by society.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To take a stand in defense of the LGBTQIA+ community, some institutions and companies annually organize a Pride Week. It is a period dedicated to learning and reinforcing support for this important cause.</span></p>

<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Pride Week at Cheesecake Labs</span></h3>

The event brings different people to speak and share their knowledge. The goal is to grow more each year and promote important discussions that support the LGBTQIA+ movement &#8211; in and outside the company.<br />

This can be observed by how we appreciate diversity throughout the whole year and it reinforces the company&#8217;s values ​​- one of them being &#8220;Respect people and embrace differences&#8221;</span>.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Throughout the week, Cheesecake also featured an open talk about the use of neutral language, its history and the do&#8217;s and don&#8217;ts. Also, the Cakers had a moment to watch a short film together, which has opened space for reflections and discussions. We brought different contents for this week, aiming to promote learning at different levels and impact everyone at the company.</span></p>
